Free Association: A Q&A With BAM's Richard Rinehart

RR : I think BAM/PFA is very much a part of the Berkeley ethos that questions the artistic and social status quo. U.C. Berkeley was home to both the Free Speech movement and the Open Source movement and those both directly inform BAM/PFA programs — particularly in the area of digital art. The Bay Area in general is home to the information revolution; many of the values and intentions of which were socially transformative. The Bay Area is also a home base to the DIY and Green movements — social movements whose values often fall very much in line with the others mentioned here and contribute to a regional character that is heavily defined in terms of social change.

May It Be a Good Week

May 12, 2008

Virgo (8/23-9/22)

There is a greater clarity in your life today. It's almost as if a light has suddenly been turned on and things finally make sense. The reason for this could be a new person in your life, but it is more likely that you simply have made a connection between a past trial and what is going on now. You have learned, and are taking insight from your own heart to see things more clearly. In effect, you are able to give yourself your own good advice! It's more proof that you are growing.

HIGH HIRSHHORN MAGNES

READ THIS ARTICLE ABOUT THE HIRSHHORN.

check out the ad campaign/look-and-feel for the High.

History

The High Museum of Art, founded in 1905 as the Atlanta Art Association, is the leading art museum in the Southeastern United States. The High's first permanent home came in 1926 with the donation by Mrs. Joseph M. High of her family's residence on Peachtree Street.

The New High

The grand opening of the new High Museum of Art in November 2005 was an historic milestone not only for the Museum, but also the city of Atlanta and the Southeast. The renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano fashioned an architectural masterpiece in Midtown Atlanta.

The Buildings

Architects from the Genoa , Italy–based Renzo Piano Building Workshop, in collaboration with Atlanta-based Lord, Aeck & Sargent, Inc., designed three new buildings for the High: the Susan and John Wieland Pavilion, the Anne Cox Chambers Wing and the Administrative Center. The Wieland Pavilion will serve as the new main entrance to the Museum.

MAGNES can DO THIS! ...and, in fact, we are. Even if it is not the center of the universe or funded to the hilt. Keep your eyes on the prize. And check out the new web site this fall.

Golem

a historic performance ; )....very difficult to document with the reflection in the window and the traffic on Valencia...

oh, tons of fun and hoping there was someone there who actually captured some of it, because it was actually sorta smart. in this work moira is writing about dark chapters that must never be forgotten, and she is writing about memory and she is writing about writing. honored to be there in my pajamas.

no youTube category for "art." so filed under something like "activism."

For a little more background, please see an earlier post about Moira and Alice Herz Sommer.

Where I'll be tomorrow...

Tomorrow I’ll be at the Right Window Gallery in ATA (Artists Television Access) building, 992 Valencia Street at 21st, San Francisco.

In fact I will be IN the right window gallery… as part of a live performance series entitled "Looking but Not Touching," curated
by Cassie Riger [rightwindow.blogspot.com]. The performances will be staged inside the window space, and the audience will watch from the sidewalk.

I will be part of Moira Roth's performance "Pt. 1, 'Rachel Marker, Franz Kafka and the Golem, Prague 1924-1939" – this Sunday, May 11, 5:00-5:15 p.m.

I’ll be the Golem -- mute and strong -- very me...

Really not sure how I got this gig...admire Moira to pieces, thrilled to be there and looking forward to writing "golem" in Hebrew backwards on my forehead with my son's washable markers. It'll be my costume.

Oh, and I did shave my head, completely...I've been wanting to do that for years.

I’ll post more on this after it’s done.

Newspapers Video Blogging

My friend Billy says that video blogz is where we are all going.

In fact, he writes:

"facebook's SO 2007" - W.R. Cometti, 2008

so what's the new vehicle, Master of All Media?

did I tell you I might be in a NYTimes article about museums and on-line social networking? we shall see...

Hey- I see you've uncovered my video blogs. The next video medium is going to be video chatting! We're probably getting the gear for it in the next month or two. We can then be all like Logan's run with video phone chat stuff. Let me know about your article.

In fact, Billy and his wife Susan have just installed iChat in their London flat. I can't wait to be in the future with them. They got a brand new-ish baby.

Here's a nice piece I found through my friend Frances D.'s blog, linked to another blog she stays up on by a guy named Howard Owens. His site's very news-y and that's Frances D.'s background...(did someone say Columbia School of Journalism?)

Billy's recovering from ankle surgery. AND he's a basketball player. Be well, Billy. We'll see you in JULY!!!!

Here's Billy's latest video blog...sorta:

I love helen hunt & so does helen hunt

...walking past this poster for her new movie - way to go Helen Hunt, Helen Hunt & Helen Hunt. Funny to think...I read this movie's been many years in-the-making. I guess it took so much for her that she thinks she needs to give herself a lot of credit.

fabulist

Ivory S. Madison is the Founder and CEO of Red Room. I know her cook. It's my dear sister Sarah's dear friend Lois' brother. He's a chef and skater.

Click here or on the image at left to find Jonathon Keats at MAGNES in Red Room...or on Red Room..or...Jonathon calls himself a fabulist now. Fabulous.

Here's an old piece Keats wrote in the Prospect on book-length myths, as reimagined by contemporary authors. The series was published by Canongate, says the fabulist Keats. Following is what they say at the Canongate site:

Welcome to a site where you can read about, and contribute to, the cultural zeitgeist. This website is about a group of people sharing opinions and thoughts about things that make our lives interesting, fun, even frustrating. Whether it's a play you've seen or a poem you've written, a review of your favourite book, an opinion you've got about something in the news or something you simply have to get off your chest, we want to hear it - and so do the other contributors to this site.

Sounds like a sign I'd like to see on the doors of a museum.
